“I’m Dreaming of a White Christmas.” Remember that classic from Bing Crosby?
I’ve finally found the opportunity to watch his 1954 holiday classic “White Christmas,” and it is unbelievably amazing. It’s a masterpiece in cinematic history with such great songs by Irving Berlin and wonderful performances.
Bing Crosby and Danny Kaye play Bob Wallace and Phil Davis, two singers better known a Wallace & Davis, who both find themselves in Florida watching two beautiful singer sisters Betty (Roemary Clooney, aunt of you know who) and Judy Haynes (Vera Ellen). Despite a busy schedule, Phil decide to join the sisters in Vermont, and Bob reluctantly tags along.
Down there, there’s no snow, and they reunite with their commanding officer Major General Thomas F. Waverly (Dean Jagger), who runs the cottage they’re staying at. Since he has no business, the two decide to bring their Broadway crew to not only perform, but to bring in more guests. And to show their appreciation for their commanding officer, Bob decides to invite the soldiers who served for him.
But the movie also focuses on their love stories, as Judy feels like Betty is more of a mother figure, and a mix up has Betty dumping Bob. That’s when Judy and Phil have to set up a fake engagement for themselves.
“White Christmas” has such memorable lines, terrific scenery, and a Christmas spirit, which lives on in our hearts. Crosby, Kaye, Clooney, Ellen, and Jagger-all exceptional in every way possible. The music is robust, and the choreography is astonishing-all the qualities of a landmark musical. If all romantic comedies could be like this, it would either be a miracle or the death of film criticism. You decide
