The finale that delivers on the pain, poop, and prostate exams done by robots.
I just saw an Instagram video where guys were running into random spots to try to enter the world of the “Backrooms,” and this was immediately after I saw “Jackass: Best and Last” last night. And that movie is supposed to open and close with the warning: “The stunts in this movie were performed by professionals, so for your safety and the protection of those around you, do not attempt any of the stunts you are about to see.”
This is the fifth and final entry in the MTV to movie franchise, and it adds some new gross and dangerous stunts, as well as clips from previous movies and episodes, and stunts that couldn’t legally be aired. One of them involves the police and the other is too easy to copy. And even though I grew restless with some of the stunts towards the end, I still found some big laughs in a good chunk of “Jackass: Best and Last” for me to recommend to fans. And I was laughing really hard, even when it was stinky, stupid, and totally unsafe. And I’m betting someone will tell me: “Unsafe is putting it mildly.”
The new stunts include a robot that gives Steve O a prostate exam, a game of Twister that reeks, Paul Walter Hauser in a trivial game with Preston Lacy, and a ping pong ball coming from, well, you don’t want to know. And the old clips include Brad Pitt getting abducted, some Poo Cocktails, the Wee Man bar fight, and the toy car X-ray. And we even get a “Bad Grandpa” clip with Johnny Knoxville’s old geezer Irving at a strip club. I would have loved to see better archival clips, but there are a lot of good choices here and they do help remind fans of the good old days. The dangerous and disgusting good old days.
I think like spoof films (especially with the success of the new “Scary Movie”), the “Jackass” movies are critic proof, because fans keep coming in to laugh, wince, and look away. There’s not supposed to be a story in any of these films; there’s supposed to be stunts, vulgarity, and the wretched excess of it all. And it’s always fun to see Johnny Knoxville, Chris Pontius, Wee Man, Steve O, and the gang being buddies and screwing around with each other. It’s amazing that they’re still alive after all these years. And even in their 50s, I don’t think they have learned anything.
“Jackass: Best and Last” is no breakthrough, but it is funny and stupid enough for my tastes. And we do get to say goodbye to the crew without anyone giving us the finger. It just takes its grocery cart ride to a whole other level. So, full disclosure, I’m not condoning anything you fans want to attempt. I’m telling you to laugh your asses off. That’s it. And therefore, I have to say: “I’m Christopher Zweig and Welcome to Jackass!”
