The Fantastic Four: First Steps

Finally, a Fantastic Four movie that’s actually fantastic.

Other than the unreleased film from the 90s, I guess every decade in the 5 digits, we’re going to get a new “Fantastic Four” film. The first in 2005 spawned one sequel, while the second in 2015 spawned haters including myself. And the third attempt “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” enters the MCU but in a futuristic 60s universe. It could either be like “The Incredibles” or like the Fantastic Four when they were created in comic books by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby in 1961. Either way, this movie finally gives Marvel’s First Family” their values.

We know the Fantastic Four started when these four scientists went into space and got affected by space particles that gave them superpowers. Reed Richards (Pedro Pascal) becomes an elastic man named Mr. Fantastic, his wife Sue Storm (Vanessa Kirby) becomes Invisible Woman, her reckless brother Johnny Storm (Joseph Quinn) becomes a fire man named Human Torch, and Reed’s best friend Ben Grimm (Richie himself Ebon Moss-Bacharach) becomes an orange rock monster named Thing. At least I think he’s an orange rock monster.

Few things.

1.) Reed and Sue are expecting their first child, who may or may not have superpowers.

2.) Thing suggests that “It’s Clobbering Time” is only said on cartoons. So you can keep asking him “What time is it?,” but he’ll answer: “It’s time for dinner.”

3.) They have a robot assistant named H.E.R.B.I.E. (Humanoid Experimental Robot B-Type Integrated Electronics).

4.) One of their common enemies is Mole Man (Paul Walter Hauser), who has an underground society.

5.) The Silver Surfer (Julia Garner) is a girl this time, and she tells humanity that the gigantic cosmic being Galactus (Ralph Ineson) is going to consume Earth.

“The Fantastic Four: First Steps” was directed by Matt Shakman, whose first feature was “Cut Bank” and has directed TV episodes like “WandaVision,” and “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia.” His second feature makes us want to tell Josh Trank: “Now that’s a Fantastic Four movie!”

Seeing it in an IMAX theater, I was able to enjoy the action sequences, which aren’t indulging and wall-to-wall as most action movies these days. I was also able to find a sense of humor, kudos to Moss-Bacharach’s “Thing” and Quinn’s Human Torch. I was also able to see the chemistry between Reed and Sue, kudos to Pascal and Kirby. And I was also able to see the challenges that Galactus and the Silver Surfer were able to give to our heroes.

Without spoiling much, there are times when society begins to turn their back on the heroes based on certain decisions. And that would be twice this month that has happened. The first was in DC’s “Superman,” which revealed a plot point in the Man of Steel’s stay on Earth. If you haven’t seen that film yet, I won’t spoil anything for you.

We don’t get much depth out of Galactus, but we do get some emotions out of the Silver Surfer. And I like her scenes with Human Torch. Some of them comical, others are consistent, and some require music records.

It would have taken a miracle for someone to make a “Fantastic Four” movie that likes the heroes and their powers (the new cast delivers unlike Miles Teller, Kate Mara, Michael B. Jordan, and Jamie Bell a decade ago), makes some tributes to the classics, and asks some very interesting questions. And that’s twice this summer in which certain pregnancies answer questions. The first would be “28 Years Later” with the pregnant zombie, and now we have Invisible Woman giving birth. We did get Jack Jack in “The Incredibles,” so anything is possible.

Rating: 3.5 out of 4.

  1. About dang time Marvel fans see a proper FF movie. 2005, 2007 and 2015 were south harmon institute of technology. 2025 reboot’s the best one so far. I’m stoked to see my favorite superhero team, X-Men joining forces with Avengers, Thunderbolts and FF to duke it out with Doctor Doom in Avengers: Doomsday. I’m also stoked for Insomniac Games’ Wolverine and X-Men ’97’s second season. 2026 will be an epic year for X-Men fans like me.
