Another wake up call for this whodunit franchise. “Wake Up Dead Man” is the third entry of the “Knives Out” movies, and I have seen all three of them at the Chicago […]
Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery
Now You See Me: Now You Don’t
A lot of tricks, but not enough magic. “We vanished for a while, but in the world of magic, everything that disappears reappears, at least if the trick is done right,” says […]
It Was Just an Accident
One of the best revenge thrillers from any country. I’m told that the filmmaker Jafar Panahi, who was also an Iranian political prisoner, didn’t get official filming permission from Iranian authorities to […]
Bugonia
If this girl is actually an alien, then this is one of the best of the genre. I seem to recall Richard Roeper’s review of “The Killing of a Scared Deer,” in […]
The Mastermind
A good movie about a bad thief. The centerpiece of “The Mastermind” has a character telling the main thief: “I don’t think you thought things through enough.” According to what Kelly Reichardt’s […]
Roofman
I’m a Toys “R” Us kid with this movie. When we see Channing Tatum robbing a McDonalds and suggesting that the franchise never notice some missing money, it relaxes me because I […]
After the Hunt
Julia Roberts’ first collaboration with Luca Guadagnino is a misfire. Luca Guadagnino’s “After the Hunt” opens with Woody Allen styled credits, especially with the casting in alphabetical order (Ayo Edebiri, Andrew Garfield, […]
Play Dirty
This crime caper doesn’t play fair. The opening of “Play Dirty” looks and sounds like it wants to enter Quentin Tarantino and Steven Soderbergh territory with the thieves talking about how the […]
One Battle After Another
PTA has done it again! Viva La Revolution! I saw “One Battle After Another” in Vista Vision yesterday, and I think that’s how all of Paul Thomas Anderson’s movie should be seen […]
Only Murders in the Building (Season 5)
A fun fifth season with gangsters and doormen. When we last saw Charles-Haden Savage (Steve Martin), Oliver Putnam (Martin Short), and Mabel Mora (Selena Gomez), Oliver has been married, the doorman Lester […]
