The Year in Animation (2016)

THE BEST ANIMATED FILMS OF THE YEAR

5.) “Sausage Party”
Voices of Seth Rogen, Kristen Wiig, Michael Cera, Edward Norton, Nick Kroll, Bill Hader, David Krumholtz, James Franco, Paul Rudd, Jonah Hill, Craig Robinson, and Salma Hayek
Following “The Night Before” and “Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising,” the Seth Rogen I know and love is back, and so is adult animation.
4.) “Finding Dory”
Voices of Ellen DeGeneres, Albert Brooks, Ed O’Neill, Kaitlin Olsen, Ty Burrell, Idris Elba, Diane Keaton, Eugene Levy, Hayden Rolence, Dominic West, and John Ratzenberger
It’s not better than the original, but it manages to keep the heart and joy of “Finding Nemo.”
3.) “Moana”
Voices of Dwayne Johnson, Auli’i Cravalho, Rachel House, Temuera Morrison, Jemaine Clement, and Alan Tudyk
Here is a tribute to some of director Ron Clements and John Musker’s greatest Disney animated features, as the two directors transcend to the CGI universe.
2.) “The Red Turtle”
No Voice Actors, Other Than Some “Heys” and Shouts.
With the miracle of hand-drawn animation, it captures the beauty of Mother Nature on a desert island with a stranded man, a red turtle who transforms into a beautiful woman, and their little boy.
1.) “Zootopia”
Voices of Ginnifer Goodwin, Jason Bateman, Idris Elba, Jenny Slate, JK Simmons, Octavia Spencer,  Alan Tudyk, Shakira, Don Lake, Bonnie Hunt, Nate Torrence, and Tommy Chong
Disney has done it again with a world of animals, who learn a valuable lesson about segregation. It also made my Top 10 list of the year’s ten best films, because of all the wonderful features it has.
HONORABLE MENTIONS
“Sing,” “Kung Fu Panda 3,” “The Secret Life of Pets,” “Kubo and the Two Strings”
THE WORST ANIMATED FILM OF THE YEAR
“Ice Age: Collision Course”
Voices of Ray Romano, John Leguizamo, Denis Leary, Simon Pegg, Jessie J, Nick Offerman, Josh Peck, Adam Devine, Seann William Scott, Wanda Sykes, Jennifer Lopez, and Queen Latifah
Can’t Scrat just eat his damn acorn and move on with his life? This otherwise fun series has just been melted by this boring sequel.
